Aoun: Negative dimensions to parliament term's extension amid popular, political rejection

NNA – President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun, intensified his contacts at various levels over the call upon the House of Representatives to convene in session tomorrow with a law draft on its agenda to extend the parliament`s term for an additional year.
The contacts focused on ways to deal with this issue after the political and popular reactions rejecting the extension of the House`s term, especially that President Aoun had highlighted, in his positions, the need to pass a new electoral law that meets the aspirations of the Lebanese, pointing to the negative dimensions of such an extension.
Aoun also followed up on the security developments in Sidon and Ain El Helweh camp, stressing the need to implement the decisions taken by the Cabinet at its meeting on Monday with regards to these security events.
In this context, Aoun received Army Commander General, Joseph Aoun, and Director of Intelligence Brigadier General, Antoine Mansour, on the occasion of his appointment. During the meeting, the general security situation in the country, in Sidon and Ain el-Helweh camp was reviewed. Aoun wished Mansour success in his new missions, underlining the role played by the Directorate of Intelligence in maintaining security and stability in the country and combating terrorism through proactive security operations.
Aoun also received former French Defense Minister, Michele Alliot-Marie, who is currently in Beirut to attend the opening of the Beirut House Library in Sodeco this afternoon.
During the meeting, the Lebanese-French relations were discussed and the French minister stressed that all French presidential candidates of all political affiliations were keen to activate Lebanese-French ties and support Lebanon in the face of challenges.
Separately, Aoun received a delegation from the Committee devoted to treating the cases of unregistered children, under the chairmanship of Attorney Alice Keirouz Suleiman, who briefed the president on the activities of the Committee, including the campaign launched to raise awareness and issue a manual on the mechanism of registration for children, and the allocation of a hotline for this dossier at the Ministry of Social Affairs.
Aoun praised the efforts exerted by the committee and inquired about its needs, stressing his personal care for Lebanese children in general and unregistered ones in particular, pointing out the need to combat child trafficking crimes, give attention to abandoned children and issue strict penalties against perpetrators of any kind of crimes against children.
