Police administration will deal with erring personnel – IGP

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante-Apeatu, has warned that the police administration will deal decisively with personnel whose actions or inaction would bring the integrity of the service into disrepute.

He said the administration would be non-compromising on issues of discipline and the core values of integrity, respect for the law and professionalism.

Opening the 47th cadet officers course at the Police College in Accra last Wednesday, the IGP, therefore, charged police officers irrespective of their ranks or positions, to be abreast of the vision and mission of the service and put their heart into it.

He asserted that it was the vision of the new administration to make the Ghana Police Service an institution capable of delivering planned, protective and peaceful services up to the standard of international best practices.

Transformation agenda

The IGP said one of the innovations of the transformation agenda was to extend the services of police officers to all the towns and villages, while the personnel of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) under the community protection agenda complemented that effort.

Mr Asante-Apeatu said the police academy, hitherto called the police college, was established in 1959 to train senior police officers whose quality was comparable to the Metropolitan Police of the United Kingdom and the academy had since produced many distinguished police officers who had excelled in diverse fields.

Course structure

For his part, the Commandant of the Police Academy, ACOP Anderson Fosu-Arkaah, said the course had been designed to take the cadets through topical areas such as management studies, crime prevention and investigation, operational planning and patrols. The others are criminal procedure, law of evidence, service enquiry, anti-human trafficking among others.

“The course which is residential, would create opportunities for the cadet officers to network and build esprit the corps, which is fundamental to making participants competent performers in whatever position they may find themselves after commissioning,” he said.
