Effiduase (Ash), April 10, GNA – The Sekyere East District Education Director, Nana Otuo Acheampong, has called for parents to support teachers to give good character training to children.
He said the focus should not be only on academic performance but helping them to reject indiscipline and deviant behavior.
He was speaking at the open day of the Effiduase cluster of schools at Effiduase in the Sekyere East District.
It provided the platform for the stakeholders – teachers, parents, religious and community leaders to discuss ways of raising the quality of education.
Nana Acheampong spoke against the situation where parents physically assaulted and insulted teachers, simply for punishing their erring children.
He said that was not the right thing to do and that there needed to be understanding and cooperation between the teacher and the parent to train and nurture the youth into responsible adults.
The Education Director condemned the practice of forcing young girls into early marriage and asked that this was stopped.
The girl child, he indicated, should be given the opportunity to pursue academic careers to become more assertive and economically empowered.
Nana Acheampong used the occasion to counsel teachers to constantly upgrade themselves to improve their teachings skills.
He encouraged them to strive to become adept in the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for teaching and learning.
They must also ensure that the teaching of mathematics and science was made lively, to make these subjects attractive to students – take out the fear.
Mr. Richard Owusu Afranie, head teacher of Effiduase D/A Basic School, appealed for the construction of additional structures to create space for effective academic work.
